From Yorkers to Wisdom: Why I Wrote This Book : Lasith Malinga

Updated: May 23

After I retired from professional cricket, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who reached out—former teammates, fans, and aspiring cricketers—asking me to share my journey. They wanted to hear my story. Not just the victories, but the real journey—from being a schoolboy in Sri Lanka with a wild slinging action, to becoming one of the most feared fast bowlers in international cricket.

They didn’t just want nostalgia. They wanted insights. Guidance. Inspiration.

They wanted to know what it really takes to rise through the ranks and survive in a game that keeps evolving, especially for fast bowlers.

Why I Decided to Write: (Lasith Malinga)

I didn’t write this book to celebrate my career. I wrote it to help you—whether you’re a young cricketer dreaming of the big stage, a coach looking for fresh perspectives, or simply a cricket lover who wants to understand the game from the inside out.

Cricket today is not what it was when I played. The fitness demands, the pace of the game, the formats—everything has changed. But some truths remain timeless.

In this book, I aim to share the principles, tactics, and mental frameworks that helped me stay consistent over two decades. I’ll walk you through:

  • Types of deliveries every fast bowler must master

  • How to break down a batter's strengths and weaknesses

  • The art of tactical game reading

  • How to develop self-awareness and discipline as a cricketer

  • The mental toughness needed to perform under pressure

These are not made-up theories. These are the lessons "Lasith Malinga" learned from 20 years on the field—from school cricket to IPL, from net sessions in the sun to World Cup finals.

This Book Is a Tool , Not a Trophy

This isn’t a book you read once and put away. It’s a manual. A training partner. A mentor.

I urge you not to read it just for enjoyment. Read it with a notebook. Highlight what resonates. Test the ideas in the nets. Reflect on them after matches. Read it again and again, until the ideas become your second nature.

Cricket doesn’t reward talent alone. It rewards preparation, resilience, and reflection.

That’s the path I’m trying to illuminate for you—so you can play not just with skill, but with strategy.

One Final Thought

Before you dive into the book, here’s a quote that has stayed with me from the very beginning of my journey:

"If you can’t endure pain, you shall let go of the game."– Separamadu Milton & Swarna Thenuwara (My parents)

young Lasith Malinga with his parents, receiving a trophy

Cricket is not for the faint-hearted. But if you're willing to fight, to learn, and to rise after every fall—then this book is for you.

Welcome to KILLER. Let’s begin.
